Idyllwild Rides The
San Jacinto Mountains offer spectacular trails, similar to those in the Sierra Mountains.
Idyllwild, a lovely mountain artsy community, is located in Southern California, 100 miles
northeast of San Diego. A good place to camp and ride is
McCall Park,
a county-run equestrian camp in Mountain Center 4 miles south of Idyllwild on Highway 243.
From there you can ride out or trailer to Idyllwild or Garner Valley for lots of ride
options.

Sierra Rides
The Sierra Nevada, the granite spine of California dividing the moist softer
west side from the dramatic drier east side, offers unlimited riding opportunities.
The headwaters of the San Joaquin River area
accessed
from Mammoth Mountain off Hwy 395 on the east side provides the best of both. Staying at
Reds Meadow Pack Station
and/or the
USFS horse camp at Agnews Meadow
gives access to a multitude of trails to ride and enjoy. You need reservations in order
to drive down the fairly steep one lane road (just take it slow) from the Mammoth Ski area;
otherwise there are shuttle buses for day visits. Reds Meadow has private corrals with feed
included for a nominal fee. Check with them for camping options. Agnews Meadows has tie
rails and water nearby. The trails are magnificent. This is is truly where Nature shows off,
comparable to the best anywhere.

Wawona Rides
Wawona Horse Camps are the best kept secret we've found. Located near the south
entrance to Yosemite National Park, the two horse camps hold up to three rigs each
and are on the south fork of the Merced River, across a covered bridge from the
Wawona Hotel and golf course, and 45 minute drive from Yosemite Valley.
There are beautiful trails
including one to the Mariposa Grove of Sequoia trees. Something for everyone.
